Chapter Twenty-Six

Tapper Special Agent Alanna MacTavish

Alanna got to her feet at the same time her charge, Mr. Doyle, did and just before the rest of the room. Secure the exit. Check the hall. She went to the wide double doors of the conference room and pushed them open into the corridor, wary of threats. Daytime or not, there could still be danger. Something tiny clinked against the bottom of the door, but pushed out of the way easily. She pressed the doors open until they locked, her eyes bouncing up and down from the base of the door where she'd heard the noise, and the two ends of the hallway. Something must've been placed there while the door was closed. A cup maybe?

Alanna peered around the edge of the door and saw what the door had hit. It was a small black piece of plastic the size of a pinky finger. A USB drive? The agent pulled a rubber glove out of her suit interior pocket and after crouching, picked the drive up using the glove like a napkin. The drive had no markings on it and other than its location, had nothing special about it. It was ordinary. Alanna knew better than to dismiss it. As she slipped the tiny piece of what could be evidence into her pocket, the room emptied. She stood out of the way and watched as the locals all dispersed down the hall and into the lobby like a bucket of minnows dumped into the sea.

"Something wrong?" someone with an accent asked her.

Alanna turned. She already knew it was Mr. Doyle. "I found something behind the door just now. A memory stick." She produced the small item from her pocket using the loose glove.

Mr. Doyle's eyes furrowed at the device. "Interesting, and quite suspicious. Ask the hotel staff who came down this hallway after our meeting started. Good eye, Agent. I suppose we should plug it into a computer and see what's on it, eh?"

"There's a suitable laptop computer in the tank. It's set up to protect itself from malicious code and has nothing on it that's worth stealing," Alanna said.

"Brilliant. Artur, Ambryn, and Agent Spooner are going to head to the Coroner's office. Let's view the contents of the disk first and head over."

"It's not a disk," Alanna said as the two men began walking in step.

"I am not technologically savvy Agent. That's your role in this. Have I told you about my apprentice, Abraham? A charming young man, if you could ignore his foul mouth and loud music. Now there was a student I could be proud of. Very technologically savvy."
